Google has unveiled a small computer bearing its brand. Called the Nexus Seven,the 7-inch tablet is manufactured by Taiwan's AsusTek Computer .
The device will ship in mid-July starting at $199 - the same price as the Kindle Fire. By contrast, iPads start at $499. Customers can start ordering it through Google on Wednesday, initially in the US, Canada and Australia.
It will run the next version of Google's Android operating system, called Jelly Bean. It is also designed specifically for Google Play, the company's online store for movies, music, games, books and apps.
Google said that 1 million devices using its Android mobilesoftware are being activated every day.
Executives of the Internet search leader showcased the new 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version ofAndroid operating system at the event in San Francisco. The new software delivers faster performance, according to the company, and new features such as voice search.
The tablet features a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. It is powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU. The device also has a front-facing camera.
Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. The Nexus 7 tablet offers up to 9 hours of HD video playback and 300 hours of standby. Thetablet weighs 340 grams. The shipments will begin mid July.
It is very likely to challenge Amazon.com's Kindle Fire than Apple's popular iPad, which hasa display that measures nearly10 inches diagonally.
Besides, Google Play will now offer movies for sale, rather than only rentals. It has also added TV shows and magazinesto its Play offering.
